Calloway School hires director of student professional development

September 2, 2008

Sam Leonard Beck has joined Wake Forest University’s Calloway School of Business and Accountancy as director of student professional development in the Ernst & Young Professional Development Center.  She is the first person to lead the newly created center.

The center was established this summer through the generosity of the Ernst & Young Foundation, as well as that of the partners and employees of Ernst & Young, to offer dedicated professional development programs and advising services to all Calloway School majors.  Beck will administer programs aimed at honing students’ job-readiness skills in such areas as business etiquette, professional presence, time management, team-building and networking.

“The Ernst & Young Professional Development Center provides a unique opportunity among undergraduate business schools for students to acquire the higher-level skills and knowledge to be exceedingly ready for career success on day one,” Beck said.

Beck was director of career development at High Point University for the past 14 years and prior to that worked in career counseling at Forsyth Technical Community College for nine years.  She has been active in state, regional and national career organizations, serving as president of the North Carolina Career Development Association and as an executive board member of the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers.

Beck received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest, graduating cum laude with a double major in speech communication and history.  She received a Master of Arts degree in history from Wake Forest and completed additional coursework at the Wake Forest School of Law, in the Wake Forest graduate program in counseling and in the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s graduate program in counseling and educational development.  Beck is a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Certified Counselor, a National Certified Career Counselor and a Master Career Counselor.
