WFU shuttle adds night service

August 26, 2008

Shuttle service at Wake Forest University’s Reynolda Campus has been expanded to include regularly scheduled stops at night.

The shuttle previously operated with scheduled stops until 6 p.m., and afterward like a taxi cab, responding to individual calls for service. The new combined day and night schedules provide regularly scheduled service from 7:45 in the morning until nearly 3 the following morning.

Begun in 1999, as a Wake Forest Student Government initiative using volunteers, the shuttle is now operated by the University Police Department with full-time uniformed drivers.  Jermyn Davis, president of the student body, said Student Government last year asked University Police to consider adding scheduled stops in the evening as a safety enhancement.

“The shuttle is designed for safety,” said Chief of Police Regina Lawson.  “At the same time, ridership has grown tremendously, so we’re trying to be more efficient.”

University Police statistics show the shuttle recorded more than 43,000 total riders last year, up from about 29,000 four years ago.  In each of the past four years, the number of night riders has been three to five times the number using the day shuttle.

The shuttle begins its day schedule with a 7:45 a.m. stop at the lower parking lot on Student Drive, and follows a route with stops at the upper Student Drive parking lot, the First Assembly of God church parking lot, Worrell Professional Center, Wingate Road between Calloway/Kirby and Greene halls, Tribble Hall, Winston and Salem halls, Lot C, and arrives at Lot A about 7:58 a.m. before beginning the circuit again.  The route is repeated throughout the day until 6 p.m.  The day schedule is designed to provide a shuttle stop every 20 minutes at each location.

The night schedule begins at 6 p.m. at the Student Drive parking lots and includes stops at The First Assembly of God parking lot, Townhouse Apartments, Palmer and Piccolo residence halls, Greene Hall, Tribble Hall, Lots C, A and P, Martin and Polo residence halls and North Campus Apartments.  The last shuttle to campus from the Student Drive parking lots departs at 2:30 a.m. and service concludes at 2:44 a.m. at Tribble Hall.  The night schedule is designed to provide a shuttle stop every 30 minutes at each location.

Scheduled shuttle stop times are posted at each location, and complete routes and times may be viewed online at www.wfu.edu/police/shuttle.html.  For more information, call 758-5591.
