Wake Forest among 19 debate host applicants in 2008
April 3, 2007
Officials at Wake Forest University learned April 2 that the university is one of 19 applicants to host one of the debates to be sponsored and produced in 2008 by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD).
The CPD announced the applicants yesterday after the deadline passed last week for submitting an application.
Wake Forest, which hosted presidential debates in 2000 and 1988, is the only North Carolina applicant. Other applicants include colleges and universities and various non-profit organizations across the country. The CPD posted a complete list on its Web site at www.debates.org.
In 2004, the CPD held three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate.
Wake Forest proposes that a presidential debate be held in 2008 in the university’s Wait Chapel, where presidential debates were held in 2000 between George W. Bush and Al Gore and in 1988 between George Bush and Michael Dukakis.
The university expects to learn by October 2007 if the CPD has chosen it to be a debate site.
