Wake Forest music department announces February events

The Wake Forest University Department of Music will hold four events in February.  All events will be held in Brendle Recital Hall and are free and open to the public. 

Feb. 6

“A Bartok Violin Celebration!”  8 p.m.  Wake Forest faculty violinist Jacqui Carrasco will perform a recital celebrating the rhythmic, spirited violin music of Bela Bartok. Carrasco and pianist Louis Goldstein will perform “Violin Sonata No. 2.”  Student violinists and Wake Forest faculty members David Hagy and David Levy will join Carrasco to play a wide array of Bartok’s famous violin duos.

Feb. 9

Harpsichord Recital featuring Peter Kairoff.  8 p.m.  Peter Kairoff, professor of music at Wake Forest, will perform a solo harpsichord recital featuring the music of Bach, Handel, William Byrd and Baldassare Galuppi. Kairoff has also performed widely as harpsichord soloist in England, Italy, and Germany and at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston and the Magnolia Baroque Festival in Winston-Salem.  This year, he will perform this same recital at the Iowa Early Keyboard Society, the Moravian Music Foundation, Middlebury College and elsewhere.  

Feb. 24

30th Annual Lucille S. Harris and Christopher Giles Competitions in Musical Performance.  Open Competition, 1 p.m., Wait Chapel; Piano Competition, 7 p.m., Brendle Recital Hall.  The theme for the 2007 competition is “Music from 1901 to the Present.”  The competition features full-time undergraduate students who currently study applied music with a member of the Wake Forest music department.  The Open Competition will begin at 1 p.m. with an organ performance then continue with the competition performances of 26 students.  Five piano students will perform for the piano competition beginning at 7 p.m.  Cash prizes will be awarded.

Feb. 28

University Orchestra Concert.  8 p.m.  The orchestra will perform works by Mendelssohn, Debussy, Mozart, Ravel and others and will feature solos by Concerto Competition winners.
