I.   Nanotech will play host to the annual Stuttgart Workshop October 29th and 30th of 2012.  This workshop is usually held in Germany each year, but this year it had to be moved to accommodate a review of the Fraunhofer IPA.  The venue will be the new BioTech Place in downtown research park. Scientists from all over the world will be joining us for the event.  for more information on the workshop contact Dr. Carroll - the organizer.

II.  Prof. Oana Jurchescu welcomes the newest member of her research group: Mia, was born at 6:14pm on Sunday the 29 of July.  She weighed 6lb 11oz and was 20 in long.  Congratulations Oana and family!

III. Nanotech welcomes three more exchange students from Trinity College in Dublin.  As part of their degree requirements, the students will take on problems in solar cell design (Carroll), lighting efficiency (Carroll), and new biosensors (Smith).  Failte... (Irish for Welcome)

IV. The Nanotech Center will be losing two of its founding partners.  Drs. Suzy and Frank Torti from Cancer Biology, moved to the University of Connecticut this summer to take up new posts.  While we regret the loss, and the Center will surely miss their guidance and constant support, we wish them well in their new endeavors.

V.  The Nanotechnology Review - the newsletter of the Center, has changed format again.  The new electronic format will be updated continuously throughout the year and provide for more rapid feedback of news stories as they happen.  However, the same general format and content will continue.

VI. Equipment updates:  The PHI surface analysis system is now installed and in service.  A new Surface Analysis Class is being added to the Physics graduate student course offerings.  This class focuses specifically on understanding and utilizing the new capabilities in Auger, XPS, and SIMS.  Upfit of the new camera on the CM30 is expected to be completed by the start of classes.  Both sputter systems are back in service.

A new printing lab is established.

Printing technologies have advanced significantly over the past few years.  Wake Forest is investing heavily in this new technology to become a leader in 3D rapid prototyping.

DIMATIX printing system has been installed for printing of organic inks including conjugated polymers and biologicals.  A MakerBot 3D prototyper has also been added and an essential dynamics Imagine 3D printer system is on order, to be installed before classes begin.  This will give the Center the possibility of printing in nearly ANY medium except metals.  Line resolutions range from 100’s of nm to 0.1 mm, depending on the ink and the printer.

These instruments will become part of Nanotech’s new printing lab and are available for all affiliates to use.  Currently the print lab is housed at the Deacon Blvd. building.  For access contact Dr. Carroll or the facility manager Baxter McGuirt.
