Bionics is the integration of electronics with biological organisms like the body. Since the Six Million Dollar Man and Blade Runner, mankind has sought the technological means of integral electronics to supplement or replace function of the body. The development of bionic systems have faced serious challenges however: compatibility between living tissue and electronics, signal transduction and degradation, power supplies, and more. Nanotechnology is addressing may of these challenges and finally may be making true bionics a possibility.
Pushing forward into bionics means the development of accurate and sensitive sensor technologies. WFU has one of nation's premier medical facilities, and researchers are capitalizing on these new sensor technologies to develop clinical and field approaches to needs in: first responder / trauma diagnostics, clinical determination of compartment of pressures, muscular-skeletal alignment, and more. Working together with the Orthopaedics and the Wound Center of WFBMC, NanoCenter researchers are developing the next generation of medical sensor technologies.
