The Department of Music of Wake Forest University announces scholarship program competitions for new and continuing students. The most coveted award is the Presidential Scholarship for Distinguished Achievement for outstanding work in music, art, theatre, public speaking and other areas. The Presidential Scholarship program is administered through the Wake Forest University Office of Admissions. The Department of Music administers scholarships which are need-based and are awarded in amounts intended to cover the cost of applied instruction (private lessons) at Wake Forest. Application must be made to the Department of Music for these scholarship programs. The Christian Cappelluti Prize is awarded to one or two students demonstrating outstanding musical merit and promise. Students at any level, including incoming first-year students, may be nominated by a faculty member, with awards made upon a vote of the full music faculty. The award is named in memory of Wake Forest graduate Christian Cappelluti (’97), who died unexpectedly at the age of 22. Presidential Scholarships for Distinguished Achievement Presidential Scholarships for Distinguished Achievement recognize up to 20 first-year students who demonstrate a solid academic background and extraordinary achievement in dance, music, art, theater, writing for publication, public speaking and debate, community service, leadership, and entrepreneurship. These $11,200 renewable scholarships are awarded on the basis of application and appropriate evidence of distinction. Deadline is December 1. Elizabeth Harris Scholarship Fund Departmental Expectations All students who hold Department of Music awards are to participate visibly in the Wake Forest music department’s program. This means required participation in individual instruction (MUS 161 or 162, or 262) as well as in a specified departmental ensemble each semester. Further evidence of participation, such as enrollment in other music classes, also will be a factor in assessing a candidate’s worthiness for a new or renewed award. At the upper-division level, preference often is given to majors and minors. Each scholarship recipient is required to meet with the chair of the music scholarship committee before the beginning of the Fall term. Application Procedures for New Students New students who wish to apply for music scholarships must be admitted to Wake Forest University under normal application procedures. New applicants are asked to send an application, a recommendation, and a high-quality cassette (Dolby) or CD recording to the Department of Music. Applicants in composition should also submit scores of their work. Cassettes will not be returned. Please do not send video tapes. Applicants must have on file in the Financial Aid Office a Financial Aid PROFILE Form of the College Scholarship Service (Aid forms available from the Financial Aid Office, Box 7246, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC 27109.) Final decisions concerning Department of Music scholarships will be made after the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices have determined the status of all applicants. Application Procedures for Returning Students Music scholarships are not automatically renewed. Returning students who have previously received these awards must reapply by submitting an application form and letter of nomination from a member of the music faculty by May 1st. In addition, they must have a Financial Aid PROFILE Form on file in the Financial Aid Office. Finalists for Presidential Scholarships may be considered for Department of Music Scholarships. It is possible for some students to receive both Presidential and Music Department scholarships, but separate applications must be made. Wake Forest University is committed to making its programs available to qualified students from diverse backgrounds and thus, offers two types of programs: Merit-based scholarships, for extraordinarily gifted students, and need-based aid (grants, loans, and employment opportunities) for students whose families could not otherwise meet the costs of enrollment.
