Philip R. Morgan; conductor, music educator and percussionist, earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Appalachian State University and Western Carolina University respectively. His 19 year career experience spans from middle school to Collegiate. For 12 years, Philip Morgan proudly served North Carolina and Cabarrus County Schools as the Director of Bands at Concord High School (CHS) and Middle School (CMS) where he directed all levels of music instruction from beginning band to advanced large concert performance ensembles. His first venture into collegiate level instruction occurred at Western Carolina University, where he served as Associate Conductor and Adjunct Music Faculty directing the Symphony Band and assisting the Instrumental Music Education Department. Currently, Mr. Morgan is the Associate Director of Bands at Wake Forest University where shares in the operation of all University Band function. His primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- The Direction of the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black (the comprehensive WFU Athletic Bands program)
- The direction of the Symphonic Band
- The direction of the Jazz Performance Ensembles (including the “Deacon Jazz Machine” big band, the “Jazz Too” band and coaching various jazz combos)
- Conducting the Wind Ensemble.
- Conducting the Percussion Ensemble
- Teaching History of Western Music
- Teaching Independent Conducting Study,
- Preparing students for graduate study in music education/music performance
- Sponsor of Kappa Zeta Chapter Kappa Kappa Psi
Mr. Morgan plans to pursue his DMA in Music Education and Wind Band Conducting. His study of Music/Conducting/Performance has included instruction with Dr. John West, Bob Buckner, Matt Henley, Dr. Bruce Frazier, Dr. Mike Shallock, Dr. Mario Gaetano, Frank Wickes, Rick Clary, Dr. Bill Gora, Dr. Joe Brashier, Dr. Jay Jackson, Dr. Scott Meister, Harvey Warner, Todd Wright, Jay Meachum, Michael Burritt, Peter Erskine, Dave Weckl, Bill Watrous, David Holsinger, Elliot Del Borgo, and Sir Francis McBeth. Mr. Morgan has instructed/conducted numerous honor band clinics and adjudicated for concert bands and marching bands throughout the Southeastern United States. Mr. Morgan is highly sought after as a drill designer and arranger for marching bands across the country. Mr. Morgan has also given numerous lectures and paper presentations based upon both his own published and non-published works. His professional affiliations include Gamma Beta Phi, Alpha Chi, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, MENC, CBDNA, NCAE, and NCMEA.
