Bassoonist and contrabassoonist Rebecca Hammontree Libera maintains an active schedule as a symphonic performer, chamber musician, and teacher. Libera currently performs throughout North Carolina as a contracted member of the Western Piedmont Symphony, the Salisbury, Symphony, and Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, she has performed with the North Carolina Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, and the Charlotte Philharmonic.
As a chamber musician, Libera performs as part of the Libera-Chernov Trio. This ensemble, comprised of a clarinetist Matthew Libera and pianist Konstantza Chernov, has performed in the Greensboro area and is currently planning a tour of the Piedmont Triad and New England. Libera also performs as a member of the Wake Forest Faculty Quintet and the Bolton Quintet, a residential quintet based in several elementary schools in Winston-Salem, NC.
In addition to her performing, Libera is the Adjunct Instructor of Bassoon at Wake Forest University. Previously, she served as the sabbatical replacement for Michael Burns at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), teaching private bassoon lessons, reed classes, and repertoire classes. Also at UNCG, Libera teaches a class in career preparation for musicians and assists in the ethnomusicology courses. During the 2007-2008 school year she was nominated for the Outstanding TA award at UNCG. In addition to university teaching, Libera also maintains a private studio with students ranging from beginner to advanced and all age levels from elementary school to adult learner.
Currently working on her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree, Libera has worked with the Music Research Institute at UNCG for her dissertation on the effectiveness of sound shields in the prevention of hearing loss in musicians. She has received two competitive summer assistantships for her work on the subject. Before moving to North Carolina, Rebecca received her BM in Bassoon Performance and Music Education in 2004 from Ithaca College in New York State. She received her MM in Bassoon Performance from University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2006. Her former teachers have included Tony DeAngelis of the Syracuse Symphony, Lee Goodhew of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and Ithaca College, Martin Gatt of the London Symphony Orchestra, Paul Hanson, jazz bassoonist, and Michael Burns at UNCG. A member of the International Double Reed Society, MENC, CMS, and Pi Kappa Lambda, Rebecca recently completed a graduate fellowship received from Phi Kappa Phi. |
