Guest Artist Recital: Shuann Chai, fortepiano

Shuann Chai performs widely as soloist on the Fortepiano, specializing in music of the 18th- and early 19th centuries.  She studied at Oberlin College and the New England Conservatory of Music, and did further specialization at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, in the Netherlands.  Her recitals have taken her to festivals in France, Holland, Norway, the UK, and many cities in the US.   Her program at WFU will include sonatas by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, including the familiar "Moonlight" sonata.

Featuring the WFU Faculty Woodwind Quartet:
Kathryn Levy, flute
Anna Lampidis, oboe
Eileen Young, clarinet
Amber Ferenz, bassoon
and the newly-formed Reynolda Saxophone Quartet:
Christina Hankins, Andrew Craft, Toni Summey, and Eileen Young
Performing music by American composers Russell Howland, Bob Mintzer, and Judith Zaimont. Includes the North Carolina premiere of Bill Douglas's Woodwind Quartet, part of his Commission Project.

Guest Artist Recital: Eduardo Fernández, guitar

Co-sponsored by The University of North Carolina School of the Arts
and the Piedmont Classic Guitar Society
Eduardo Fernández, a native of Uruguay, is recognized as one of today's leading guitarists. The first prize winner of the 1975 Andrés Segovia Competition in Mallorca, Spain, Fernández has returned to the US every year since his New York debut in 1977, playing with prestigious orchestras as well as giving recitals, always to great acclaim from critics and audiences.

Faculty Lecture-Recital: Louis Goldstein, piano
"Morton Feldman and the Abstract Expressionist Painters of New York"
Reynolda House Museum of American Art

The great American composer Morton Feldman had several close friends among the abstract-expressionist painters of New York.  Artistically, he felt he was more influenced by the way painters worked than he was by most composers. Wake Forest University Professor of Music Louis Goldstein will explore associations between Feldman and abstract painters, and also perform some of Feldman's piano music. Goldstein’s most recent recording of Morton Feldman's For Bunita Marcuswas ranked in the top ten modern composition recordings of 2010 by The Wire Magazine.

Guest Artist Recital and Masterclass:
Marjorie Bagley, violin & James Douglass, piano

North Carolina native Marjorie Bagley is Associate Professor of Violin at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and on the summer faculty of the Brevard Music Festival. She has performed across the United States and Europe, premiering many contemporary pieces and playing with members of the Emerson, Guarneri, and Tokyo String Quartets. Her recordings can be found on the Albany, VOX, Equilibrium and New World labels. Bagley will present a recital followed by a masterclass for violin students.
James Douglass is Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

Fall Choral Concert

Brian Gorelick, conductor
Featuring the Wake Forest Concert Choir, Collegium Vocal Ensemble, and the Wake Forest Chamber Choir in a program of Miniature Masterpieces.  Featured works will be Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi and Daniel in the Lions’ Den by Daniel Pinkham.
