Unless specified otherwise, all events are free and open to the public, and take place in Brendle Recital Hall in the Scales Fine Arts Center.

Guest Artist/Alumna Recital: Laura Ingram Semilian, soprano
with Jean T. Blackwood, piano.
Presenting Hungarian folk songs collected and arranged by composers and pioneering ethnomusicologists Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók. Ingram Semilian holds the MA in history from Wake Forest, where she studied with Teresa Radomski. She also holds the MM in opera from UNC School of the Arts, and subsequently studied with Virginia Zeani. She has represented the Southeastern Region in the Metropolitan Opera’s national competition in New York.

Founded in 1983, the Wake Forest Consort’s mission is to present concerts of early music using historical performance styles and reproductions of early instruments.

Flute Fest 2011

A collaborative concert featuring students from the studio of Kathryn Levy, the WFU Flute Choir, the Silver Wind Flute Choir of Winston-Salem, and community flutists.

SYMPOSIUM:
"John's Passion/Bach's Passion: Religion, Performance, and Culture"
An interdisciplinary symposium on Bach's St. John Passion , co-sponsored by the WFU Humanities Institute, the WFU School of Divinity, the WFU Office of the Chaplain, the WFU Department of Religion, Interdisciplinary PLACe, Rabbi Mark Strauss-Cohn, and the Winston-Salem Symphony. Participants will include:

  • Rabbi Michael Cook (Hebrew Union College/Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati)
  • Professor Gail R. O'Day (Dean, WFU School of Divinity)
  • Maestro Robert Moody (Music Director, Winston-Salem Symphony)
  • Professor of Music David B. Levy
  • Professor of Religion Stephen Boyd

String Chamber Music Concert

Thursday, November 17

Collegium Musicum Concert
Stewart Carter and Brian Gorelick, directors

The theme of this concert is "The Art of Courtly Love." The Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble and Collegium Instrumentalists will present an early music concert featuring Medieval and Renaissance love songs in French, German, and Spanish.
