Asia Programs


The largest continent on Earth, Asia, is home to roughly a third of the world’s population. It is unique because of the diversity of ethnic groups, languages, cultures, and environments found within its borders. You could spend a lifetime and never see all the wonders to be found. In our programs students will be introduced to some of the countries, people, and cultures found in Asia. Programs can be modified for different grade levels.

A Far Away Place

Spiritual beliefs in Thailand are a major influence on art, music, dance, and everyday life. Students will experience the unique culture of Thailand through images, artifacts, and activities. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

1st Grade Curriculum Objectives:

  • Arts Education (Music): 9.04

Surrounded by the Sea

Japan is a country comprised of several islands. This affects every aspect of Japanese life. It dictates the size of communities, how families live, jobs, and the food they eat. Students are exposed to Japanese culture through images, objects, and a traditional game. Programs held in the Museum can be enhanced by a visit to our exhibit: KIMONO: Constructing a National Image. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

2nd Grade Curriculum Objectives:

The Many Faces of China

The many ethnic groups in China are spread across the land from the biggest cities to the remotest regions. Each of these peoples has developed distinctive ways of living. Using images and artifacts, students will learn about the beliefs, traditions, and arts of China. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

3rd Grade Curriculum Objectives:

Conquests and Philosophies

Conquering forces leave their mark on the conquered. Mongols, Manchurians, and the British have all helped shape the arts, people, and philosophies of China. Images and artifacts give students a greater understanding of Chinese history and its relationships with the outside world. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

7th Grade Curriculum Objectives:

Worms That Changed the World

High school students will explore how the lowly silk worm became the catalyst for developments in ancient China. We will look at the Silk Road’s influence on the exchange of goods, ideas, and culture from the East to the West and back. Time required: 45 min. to 1 hour.

9th-12th Grade Curriculum Objectives:
