Americas Programs


There were millions of native people living in the Americas when it was settled by Europeans. These people had languages, governments, arts, and cultures that rivaled what existed in other places. Our programs focus on how native people lived, their beliefs, and where they are now. Many of our Native American programs focus on North Carolina tribes. Any of these programs held in the Museum can be enhanced by a visit to our exhibits: Treasures from a Moravian Attic: Native American Objects from the Wachovia Historical Society Collection and How Do They Know…? The Science of Archaeology of the Yadkin River Valley. Programs can be modified for different grade levels.

Spider Lights the Way

By using objects, movement, and storytelling, children will be introduced to Native American culture. Time required: 30 to 45 min.

Kindergarten Curriculum Objectives:

  • Arts Education (Dance): 2.01, 2.05
  • Arts Education (Theater): 4.02, 8.03, 8.09
  • Language Arts: 2.01, 3.04, 4.01

First Families

Native American families were similar to families today. Parents had to provide clothing, food, shelter, and education for their children. Children were not idle but had to help with chores. Through activities and artifacts students get to experience what it was like to be a Native American child. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

1st Grade Curriculum Objectives:

  • Language Arts: 2.07, 4.01, 4.03
  • Social Studies: 1.01, 3.01, 3.02, 6.01

Attention Teachers who have booked this program: This program includes an activity where students crack nuts with an archaeological nutting stone.  Please be aware of any nut allergies (all kinds of nuts) your students have.  Let us know the degree of severity as well as how we should handle this issue.

Where’s the Tipi?

For more than 12,000 years, Native Americans have made North Carolina their home, but not in tipis. Through authentic and replicated artifacts students will learn how Native American life evolved over 12,000 years from the Paleo Indian to the Mississippian era. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

4th Grade Curriculum Objectives:

First Nations

Before North America was explored by Europeans, millions of native peoples lived here. Images and artifacts will introduce students to how different environments influenced the beliefs and lifestyles of some of these people. Students will have to use the clues given to them during the program to find the answers to a matching game. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

5th Grade Curriculum Objectives:

Maya: A Continuing Story

The Maya were conquered but not destroyed. Students will learn about the Maya civilization that flourished from 2000 B.C. until 1520 A.D. and continues today. Using images and artifacts we discover how many ancient Maya traditions still survive. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min.

5th Grade Curriculum Objectives:

Rebirth of a Carolina People

At one time, the powerful Catawba Nation claimed most of both Carolinas as their home. The struggling remnants of our Piedmont people joined them for protection. Because of war, disease, famine, and treaties, they almost lost their identity. Today the Catawba Nation and other native North Carolina descendants are again flourishing. Using images and artifacts, students will discover how these people contributed to our state and came back from the edge of extinction. Time required: 45 min. to 1 hour

8th Grade Curriculum Objectives:
