Africa is a vast and complex continent. In our programs students will be introduced to the geography, environments, and different peoples who live in Africa. We will discuss African cultures: beliefs, traditions, governments, and arts. Programs can be modified for different grade levels. Ananse’s GiftsChildren will be introduced to African culture though storytelling, movement, and objects. Time required: 30 to 45 min. Kindergarten Curriculum Objectives:
Farmers and HerdersThe Masai, the Kikuyu, and the Turkana, who are these people who live in Kenya? By using images and artifacts, students will learn about the beliefs, traditions, and family life of each group. We will compare and contrast the lives of these people. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min. 2nd Grade Curriculum Objectives:
Between the RiversThe Niger and Benue rivers roughly divide Nigeria into three large areas occupied by the Yoruba, Ibo, and Hausa-Fulani. Students will discover what makes each of these groups unique through images and artifacts. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min. 3rd Grade Curriculum Objectives:
Understanding Africa: Traditions TodayIn this program students will be exposed to ideas, values, beliefs, and traditions from Africa that may be unfamiliar to them. Through images, artifacts, and an activity, students will gain a new understanding of this continent. Time required: 1 hour and 30 min. 7th Grade Curriculum Objectives:
Kuba in the CongoHigh school students will look at ancient and modern kingdoms in Africa, with a focus on the Kuba Kingdom (1600 A.D. to present). We will discuss its origins, development, and socio/political and artistic influence on the southern Congo River region. We will explore colonial and post-colonial challenges.
