Course Registration

Course descriptions. Students will be emailed a flyer describing the Liberal Studies seminars for the coming semester. At the same time the seminars are listed on the Liberal Studies web site. This flyer goes out in October for the spring semester, February for the summer sessions, and in March for the fall semester. Attached to this flyer will be a list of other departmental graduate courses offered. A complete course listing for the university is also available.

Advising. The Liberal Studies Director serves as advisor to all students until they begin their thesis or final project. Students should feel free to contact the Director at any time with any questions about course selection.

Registering for Liberal Studies Seminars. Once a student has decided what course(s) to take, he/she contacts the Liberal Studies Office by email, indicating which course(s) are requested for the term. If email is inconvenient or unavailalbe, the student may call the Liberal Studies Office. All course requests are reviewed by the Program Director. If the courses are appropriate, then approval is given, and the Liberal Studies Administrative Coordinator registers the student.

"Unclassified" students may register only for Liberal Studies classes. Students should be aware that unclassified sampling students are not allowed to register until after degree-seeking and provisional students have registered.

Registering for a non-Liberal Studies 700 Course. Liberal Studies students should check with the instructor before registering for a non-Liberal Studies class. If the instructor agrees, the Liberal Studies student would follow the same registration procedure as for a Liberal Studies seminar. If a Liberal Studies student wishes to enroll in a course offered through the Divinity School, he or she must contact the Divinity School directly to request registration. A form will be given to the student which must be signed by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the Divinity School, the Liberal Studies Program Director, and then taken to the Divinity School Registrar's Office for registration.

Registering for a non-Liberal Studies 600 Course. To receive graduate credit for a 600 level (upper undergraduate) course, a Liberal Studies student must submit the form indicating how the 600 course will be supplemented to qualify for graduate credit. This form must be received by the Liberal Studies Office (signed by the instructor) and approved by the Director before the last add date for the course. The Director's approval must be received before registering for this course.

Registering for a Directed Study (MLS 786). A student who wishes to take a Directed Study must complete the Directed Study Form. This form (signed by the instructor) must be turned in to the Liberal Studies Office and approved by the Director by the last add date of the semester. The topic of the direct study can not be exactly the same as the student's thesis topic. The Director's approval must be received before registering for this course.

Registering for Thesis Research (MLS 791). A student who wishes to take Thesis Research must have an approved thesis proposal by the last add date of the semester. The student must submit the Thesis Proposal Form, signed by the thesis advisor, the department chair, and the Liberal Studies Director, along with the Thesis Proposal, as described on the website's Thesis Proposal Form & Guidelines page.

Registering for Graduate Fee. The Graduate School requires continuous enrollment in the fall and spring semesters. If a student decides not to take a course in either of these semesters, he/she must register for Graduate Fee.

Also, students who have completed their Thesis Research course but not their thesis must register for "Graduate Fee" for each following semester until graduation. This fee allows the student to use university facilities. A student must be enrolled in either a course or be in "Graduate Fee" status in the semester in which he or she graduates.

Registering to Audit a Class. A Liberal Studies student who wishes to audit a Liberal Studies or non-Liberal Studies Course must also register. Students not enrolled in the Liberal Studies program (including unclassified students) are not eligible to audit Liberal Studies seminars. The rule of the university is that students may not register to audit a course until the first day of the class.

Adding a Class. If a student wishes to add a class, he or she must contact the Administrative Coordinator to add the course. For each semester there is a date after which courses may not be added. In the fall and spring, this date is typically one month after the start of the semester. In the summer, it is one week after the start of the session. Full tuition is charged for courses registered late. The last date for adding classes is listed on the Liberal Studies website and WFU Graduate School website.

Dropping a Class. If a student decides to drop a class within the Drop/Add timeframe, he/she must notify the Liberal Studies Administrative Coordinator, and drop the class online through the WIN system. Simply failing to attend the class is not considered "dropping the class" by the university. If the student fails to properly drop the course, the student will still be considered enrolled in the course and be billed for class tuition, and will receive a grade based on the non-attendance. Faculty members do not drop students from their courses; it is the student's responsibility to drop a course officially.

The university sets a deadline for each semester for dropping courses. In the fall and spring, this date is typically one month after the start of the semester. In the summer, it is one week after the start of the session. The last date for adding classes is listed on the MALS web site and WFU Graduate School website. These dates are the same dates as the ones for Adding a Class as noted above. It should be noted that the drop deadlines do not coincide with the dates for refunding tuition. The section below titled "Refund of tuition" discusses those dates.

After the Drop/Add period, the student must use the Drop Form, located on-line on the Graduate School web site under "Forms" on the Student Home Page. The student should obtain the form, complete it, obtain the instructor's signature, and then file the form with the Liberal Studies Office. The dropping of a course will need to be approved by both the Liberal Studies Director and the Dean of the Graduate School.
