How to Set Up WinSCP

to connect to NFS (Network File Server)

(For BANPPRD)

This procedure replaces accessing files on admin2.

If you need to download and install WinSCP, follow the steps in this box. You can also call the Information Systems Service Desk at xHELP (x4357) for assistance.
  1. Go to Start > Run… and type in:

    \\codesrv1\WAKE\SCP\winscp407setup.exe

(or just click here if you're viewing this page in Internet Explorer)
  2. Click Run if you get any security warning prompts
  3. Accept all defaults in the Setup Wizard:
    1. Click Next at the Welcome Page.
    2. Click Next at the License Agreement.
    3. Choose Typical Installation and click Next.
(R60 users will choose Full Upgrade)
    4. Choose Norton Commander Interface and click Next.
(R60 users will not see this step.)
  4. Click Install.
  5. Click Finish.

Now continue with the setup instructions below.

  1. Find WinSCP in the Start menu under Internet Tools, or (if it wasn't preinstalled for you) in whatever location you installed it. Screenshot
  2. If this is the first time you have used WinSCP, you will need to set up a stored session. (This is like a bookmark or Favorite in a Web browser. It lets you save the login details so you do not have to type them in each time.) If you have already done this, skip to step 7.
  3. In the WinSCP Login window, click Stored sessions on the left (A) and then click New at the right (B). Screenshot
  4. For Hostname, enter:

    files.dev.banner.wfu.edu

Enter your username below that. (For security reasons, DO NOT enter your password.) Make sure SFTP is selected for File Protocol. Screenshot
  5. Select Environment from the list on the left, and then check the Preserve remote timestamp button. Finally, click Save. Screenshot
  6. You will be prompted to name the stored session so you can recognize it later. Name the session NFS BANPPRD. Click OK. Screenshot
  7. Click Stored sessions at the left (if it is not already highlighted), select your NFS BANPPRD session from the list, and then click Login. Screenshot
  8. The first time you log in, a Warning box will appear on your screen. Click Yes. Screenshot
  9. You will now be prompted for your password. NOTE: Use your network password.

Enter your password and click OK. (If you do not get a password prompt, check your network connection. The NFS server is inaccessible from WFUguest, and if you are off-campus, you must sign into VPN.) Contact the Information Systems Service Desk at xHELP (x4357) if you need assistance. Screenshot

  10. Once you have logged in successfully, you should see the file transfer window. The files and folders on your computer appear on the left. The files and folders on the server appear on the right. Screenshot
  11. Use the right pane to navigate to the correct location on the server. Double-click on each folder to drill down to the destination. For example, if you are trying to upload a file to the Finance “fupload” directory, you would double-click dataload, then BANPPRD, then finance, then fupload. If you make a mistake, click the up-directory
button to go back up one level. Screenshot
  12. Once you find the destination for your file, drag it into place on the right pane. You can drag your file from the desktop or from the left pane (if you navigate to it there first).
  13. A message will pop up to confirm the upload. Verify that everything is correct and click Copy. Screenshot
  14. When you are finished uploading, close the WinSCP window to log out and click OK to the confirmation dialog. You're done! Screenshot
  15. To re-open WinSCP,

If no shortcut was created, create a shortcut on your desktop by doing the following:

    1. Right-click on WinSCP in the Start menu.
    2. Choose Create Shortcut.
    3. The shortcut will appear at the bottom of the menu.
    4. Drag the shortcut out of the menu to your desktop.
