This page attempts to answer some of the most common
questions about using Banner at WFU. If your question is not answered here,
please contact the Information Systems Service Desk at
or 758-HELP.
- How do I get my files to and from Banner?
Sending files to or from the Banner file
server now requires the use of SCP. See the next few questions for
details about what SCP is and how to install and configure the tools.
- What’s SCP?
SCP stands for Secure Copy Protocol. It's a way of
transferring files securely between your PC or laptop and an
administrative file server.
SCP is the only authorized mechanism for doing this kind of transfer
to or from the Banner file server. If you need to upload data files
into Banner or download output files, you must use an SCP client. We
recommend WinSCP, an application which
is included in the 2008 standard WFU Thinkpad software load and is also
available as a free download. For instructions, see the next question.
- How do I install/use WinSCP?
There are two sets of instructions, one for the production system
and one for pre-production. (If you are doing user acceptance testing,
use the instructions for pre-production.)
- What about tunneling? Do I need to do
that?
Tunneling refers to an extra step that is required for certain
applications. By setting up a tunnel, you create a secure, encrypted
pathway for data to be sent or received between your computer and a
server. (SCP is already a secure communication method, so no tunnel is
required for WinSCP.)
If you are using any of the following, you will need to
set up a tunnel in order to connect to the database server:
- FormFusion
- IntelleCheck
- Nolij
- Any desktop SQL tools such as PL/SQL Developer or Toad
Here are instructions for setting up
your tunnel (PDF document).
- Where can I find Banner
documentation?
Banner documentation is provided as a series of .pdf documents. These documents are called the
“Banner Bookshelf”. Wake Forest keeps the Banner Bookshelf on-line.
It can be accessed from the Banner Unified Digital Campus website.
Additionally, online documentation is also available through Banner INB. On any Banner form,
a help ICON appears in the toolbar. Pressing this ICON brings up help screens specific to what form
you are currently accessing.
Further documentation can be found at SunGard's
customer support website. You'll need to create an account first
(see next question).
- How do I set up a customer support
account with SunGard?
Go to SunGard customer
support and click Request a Customer Support Center Account
at the right. Fill in the required information and hit Submit. You
should receive your login details within a day or two.
Once you have an account, you can log in and download documentation,
search SunGard's knowledge base, etc.
- Are there any SunGard or Banner
listserves that might be useful? How do I subscribe?
SunGard maintains quite a few lists. To subscribe go to this page and
select Get Password. Follow the instructions—you'll be
sent a verification email—to create an account, and then you can
subscribe to the lists that interest you. (Note: your SunGard
mailing list account is entirely separate from your SunGard Customer
Support account.)
If you're not already subscribed to them, you may also want to know
about some WFU mailing lists: Banner-Communications
(for maintenance and outage announcements) and Banner-Users
(for general Banner discussion).
