I continue to work on projects, including a manuscript of several hundred pages, that are extremely difficult to carry out because of the absence of even secondary materials at WFU. I spend at least six hours a day, and often much more, working on research. I have had to purchase or borrow through Inter-Library Loan well over 80% of the materials that I use. Consequently during the past decade I have annually spent more than 30% of my "take-home" pay for research and teaching.

This makes research difficult and publications infrequent. It also makes for frugality. "Lunch" is a Coke and crackers, purchased at Sam’s Club. I made my last automobile purchase in 1974—almost 25 years to the day, in fact—when I bought a used VW for $1400.
