WINGS Program - Cook Elementary
School
For the past several years, faculty and staff of the Reynolda Campus
have supported and participated in the Corporate Volunteer (WINGS)
Program for Cook Elementary School. The program was initiated by the
Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce and Winston-Salem Forsyth
County Schools to promote positive mentoring relationships and community
involvement. The program at Cook Elementary School pairs University
volunteers with kindergarten students who have entered school lacking
basic readiness skills to help them attain grade level performance.
The program begins in September and continues through the end of April.
Volunteers spend approximately one hour per week with children using
a "learning to learn" system (WINGS) that dramatically increases
the cognitive and language skills of children.
The University's policy on Administrative Leave and Release Time
identifies this program as one for which department and office heads
may grant staff emploiyees administrative leave. One and one-half
hours of paid leave time is provided weekly for employee volunteers
to train, travel, and tutor at Cook Elementary School, located off
University Parkway at 920 11th Street. This year, transportation from
campus to Cook Elementary School and return to campus will be provided
by the University Shuttle.
