Stop, Drop,& Go! originated as
a LEAD project in Spring 2002. The seven original members conceived the project
as a means to reduce landfill waste while simultaneously helping
local Winston-Salem charities. With the guidance of mentors
Lanier Jackson and Rosita Najmi, the project came to fruition,
holding its first collection in May 2002. The first sale was
held in the fall of 2002 and raised over $1000 for Samaritan
Ministries. The program is accomplished through a campus-wide
collection and sale.
Collection:
During May closing, SDG sets up collection bins in all residence
halls for student donations - clothes, storage units, shoes,
books, toys, linens, furniture, cinder blocks, etc. These donations
are collected for
use in benefiting a local charity.
In 2003 SDG added a Spring Cleaning
clothing drive, collecting student donations for Crisis Control.
The
sale following that collection fall 2003) raised over $1750
for Crisis Control in addition to a substantial clothing donation.
SDG became a part of RSA (Resident
Student Association) in the fall of 2003. RSA’s support
along with the Office of Residence Life & Housing
and student volunteers have helped sustain the project. It
continues to thrive today, adding new projects and services
each year.
