Resident Adviser - Summer Session

Description

The Summer Resident Adviser is an undergraduate student attending Wake Forest University Summer Session(s) who functions as an integral member of the Residence Life and Housing staff. S/he reports directly to the Graduate Hall Director or the Central Office Staff member supervising Summer Session Housing. The RA lives with a group of 30-40 residents and works with them in the areas of advising, programming, discipline, administration, and the general operation of the residence hall.

Qualifications

  1. One year of experience as a Resident Adviser is preferred.
  2. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at the time of the assistantship.
  3. Enrollment as a student in Summer Session.
  4. In good standing with the University and Residence Life and Housing (i.e. no disciplinary sanctions currently in effect, or within one year of assistantship.)

Terms of Employment

  1. An RA is not permitted to enter into employment situations (paid or unpaid) without written request to and response from the Graduate Hall Director or Central Office Staff member. Any such employment is not to exceed 10 hours per week.
  2. An RA is not permitted to enroll in more than 2 classes per Summer Session term.
  3. RAs are required to report to work on the specified date(s) of the contract and remain to assist with closing responsibilities on the specified date(s).
  4. An RA must limit his/her time away from campus and the community to one weekend per Summer Session term.
  5. Summer RAs are required to attend the Training Workshop at the beginning of each Summer Session term.

Responsibilities

  1. Summer RAs will be expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. This includes programming activities and attendance and participation in weekly staff meetings.
  2. In addition to the regular duty and desk duty hours, Summer RAs must be accessible and approachable to residents. Each RA should post a schedule of classes and non-academic activities. RAs should indicate on this schedule regular availability to residents.
  3. Summer RAs act as concerned, non-judgmental peer advisers whose goals are to assist residents in resolving their own concerns and problems.
  4. Summer RAs maintain confidentiality when dealing with personal concerns of residents and utilize knowledge of University resources to make appropriate referrals when necessary.
  5. Summer RAs work toward the development of a community atmosphere on their halls or designated sections of the residence halls.
  6. Summer RAs plan, implement, and evaluate floor and building wide social and/or educational activities.
  7. Summer RAs must uphold and enforce University policies and regulations.
  8. Summer RAs promptly report maintenance and repair work to Facilities Management and/or the Graduate Hall Director, and/or Central Office Staff.
  9. Summer RAs effectively and promptly communicate new and/or important information to residents and conduct necessary hall meetings.
  10. Summer RAs perform other tasks as assigned by the Graduate Hall Director or the Central Office Staff member.

To apply as a Summer Resident Adviser, select the summer assistantship application, containing the application and recommendation forms. Each document must be completed in its entirety and returned to Residence Life and Housing located in Benson University Center, Room 101.
