Reference Works

Not everything is online, and you should become adept at using the rich resources of the ZSR library, all of which are accessible through their home page, and many of which you can find below, on the bottom left of your screen, in the Research and Classroom Tools folder on the Start menu. They include:

• Places to look for quick answers to reference questions, including list of dictionaries, encyclopedias, et al.
• AskZak. Submit a question online to a reference librarian.
• Schedule a personal research session with a librarian.

Two more useful gateways to scholarly and library resources are:

• Infomine. Extensive searchable database of "academically valuable resources."
• Libraryspot. Commercial gateway to virtual libraries, including extensive reference desk.

The turn of the 20th century also saw attempts by Latin American countries to respond to the challenge of industrialism. In Mexico, Porfirio Diaz sought to build national pride through pomp and circumstance. This is the frontispiece for "Order and Progress," a pro-Diaz account of Mexican history. At the same time, he opened the economy to foreign capital, leading to the saying, "Mexico, mother of foreigners, stepmother to Mexicans."
