Imperial expansion at the end of the 19th century in turn generated renewed military conflict at the beginning of the 20th century. In East Asia, Japan came to blows first with China (1894-5) and, here, with Russia (1904-5). Japanese victory in both wars heralded the first appearance by a non-white power on the imperial scene.
