The Department of Health and Exercise Science (HES) offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science. The course of study is designed to prepare individuals for careers in medicine and allied health, such as preventive and rehabilitative programs or for further graduate study in the health sciences. The majority of our students pursue careers as a physician, physical therapist, physician assistant, nursing, occupational therapist. Other career options in the health sciences include Public Health, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Health Psychology, and Biomechanics.
Students must complete 31 hours in HES courses to complete the requirements for the major. Of these, 28 hours are from the 9 required core courses:
- Human Physiology (offered in fall and spring semesters)
- Statistics in the Health Sciences (fall and spring)
- Exercise & Health Psychology (spring only)
- Human Gross Anatomy (spring only)
- Physiology of Exercise (fall and spring)
- Biomechanics of Human Movement (fall only)
- Nutrition in Health and Disease (fall and spring)
- Assessment Techniques in Health Sciences (fall and spring)
- Epidemiology (fall and spring)
Three additional hours from elective courses are required. These may be chosen from the following courses:
- Health Issues on College Campuses-I and II (You must take both of these 1.5 hour courses to receive elective credit)
- Clinical Externship (1.5 hours)
- Clinical Internship
(1.5 hours)
- Mindfulness Meditation in Behavioral Medicine (2 hours)
- Advanced Physiology of Exercise (3 hours)
- Individual Study (1-2 hours)
- Anatomy Dissection Laboratory (2 hours)
- Special Topics in Health & Exercise Science (1.5-3 hours)
- Honors Research (1.5 hours)
