LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Typically, Wake Forest students have been rewarded all their lives for stellar academic performance and frequently they assume that that success will continue in college. For some, it does, but others find academic success to be more difficult to achieve than they ever anticipated. They may not be used to the higher standard of performance of a university setting, such as the amount of reading and work that is required. They may also not have experienced the self-directed learning expected and lower levels of structure provided in university classrooms. Some students have never had to practice effective study techniques or test-taking strategies. These problems may lead to procrastination, test anxiety, decreased motivation, and poor academic performance.

The Learning Assistance Center (LAC) is a broad-ranging resource for students with academic needs, including documented learning disabilities. The LAC provides study skills training by which students can learn to read critically, take notes effectively, manage time, improve motivation, increase reading speed, and prepare for tests. Students may also receive tutorial assistance through the LAC.

Often, students begin to perform much better after learning more about how to succeed academically in college and receiving encouragement and support.
