Dear Wake Forest Community:
Wake Forest University has received a limited shipment of H1N1 flu vaccine and will hold its first clinic November 3 and 4 to administer the vaccine. Only undergraduate students are eligible to receive the vaccine during the clinic. Later this semester, additional members of the campus community will be able to receive the vaccine when more of it is available and other clinics are scheduled.
In all, one thousand doses of the vaccine, in nasal spray form, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for undergraduate students. The vaccine is free. Students are asked to bring their Wake Forest ID cards.
The clinic will be held November 3 in Luter Residence Hall and November 4 in Davis Residence Hall. Clinic hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. On each day, 500 doses will be available. The vaccine is officially known as live, attenuated intranasal vaccine (LAIV). It is sprayed into the nose.
In this form, the vaccine is approved by public health officials for people from 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant and do not have certain health conditions, including asthma or a weakened immune system. Additional information will be available at the clinic.
Due to limited supplies and public health recommendations regarding recipients, the University is reserving the November 3 and 4 clinic for undergraduates.
The University is planning a series of H1N1 flu vaccination clinics, initially for priority groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ultimately, University officials hope to offer the vaccine to all students, faculty and staff. The clinics will be held this semester as vaccine becomes available to the University. At this point, University officials expect additional vaccine shipments, but it is not known when they will arrive. When more clinics are scheduled, the University will inform the campus community.
It is anticipated that both types of the vaccine (injectable and nasal mist) will be available at some point for distribution on campus.
