Glühwein
Ingredients:
1 1/2 liters inexpensive red wine (table wine)
tea bags for 3 quarts of tea (7-8 small or two family size tea bags) [I prefer decaffeinated]
5-6 sticks of cinnamon
15 whole cloves
two oranges (sliced)
one lemon (sliced)
1 to 1 1/2 cups of sugar
Bring the three quarts of water almost to a boil (simmer) and hang tea bags in the pot. Then add the 1 1/2 liters of red wine and let the liquid come to a simmer (it is important not to let it boil after the wine has been added). Add the cinnamon sticks and cloves and continue to stir slowly. Then add the sugar and finally the sliced oranges and lemons and continue to stir slowly. Once the entire mixture has been simmering for about five minutes, taste the wine and adjust the mixture. You may need to add a bit more sugar, or a little more wine so that the tea does not overpower the taste. For me it’s just a matter of getting the final proportions adjusted by tasting the wine. That sounds like a joke, but that’s the only way I know to fine-tune the mixture.
The wine is best drunk in mugs or punch glasses.
