First Quarter F&CS STAR Award Receiptants

Marciano Alvarado

Marciano does outstanding work.  He projects a positive work attitude and works well with others.  He understands his duties and completes all assignments on time.

Melvin Lee

Melvin has shown excellent supervisory skills.  Ask and ye shall receive!  He has pitched in and helped when needed. He’ll notify us immediately if someone is out that day.  He saves us time and trouble by having extra supplies on hand if we need them.  He seems to be on top of it all and that’s exactly what we need!

Mark Beckerdite

I’ve known Mark going on 2 years now.  He is an exceptional person and I’m glad to say that he works for Wake Forest.  He’s always professional with a great attitude.  He’s one heck of a mechanic!
Mark brings to WFU vast knowledge of his job, money saving ideas and is a customer advocate. He is always willing to help his co-workers as well as peers. Safety is an attribute that he shows daily towards himself and others.  Mark is an ASE(Automotive Service Excellence) Master Technician. This is no minor feat.  This consists of 8 modules pertaining to Auto Service.  He is also certified to perform state inspections.
Mark spent lots of time last year re-doing the MSDS log and inventory.  He performed this task in a timely fashion with no complaints.  He is constantly looking outside the box to suggest new ideas or new vendors to save WFU time and money.

Sandra Byrd

Sandra goes above and beyond her duties!  She always has a smile on her face. She’s eager to help anyone who needs it, even if they don’t ask.  She is a WFU STAR!
She has been a dynamo since the day she started.  We have never had someone who held a candle to her work ethic, she has benefited the entire building picking up tasks left by others and taking over other areas when people are out without any grumbling, she just does it.  We just love to be around her and her wonderful attitude and hard work.  I have the Annenberg Forum, room 111 under me and regularly she has to take this on in addition to her other duties to keep up the reputation of the school and department because this room is used for outside and high level internal meetings.
We are just thrilled to have her, but just because she is the best don't EVEN think about moving her elsewhere.  I have been here over 15 years and never was it such a pleasure to work with someone who is as self-motivated as she is...let me know if there is anything else I can do to help get her some recognition for this.

Horace Means

During the winter break an A/C water line burst in the basement of Collins and went undetected for some period of time. It was a Saturday and I was working Custodial Services alone. After being summoned to the building it was apparent that I was going to need help in cleaning up the water, for by that time it was several inches deep and covering the entire basement floor and affecting several rooms of this rather large residential hall.  The call went out for help. Of the many custodial employees that the CHP tried to contact to ask them to come in and help me, only Horace answered the call and came to my aid. Immediately upon entering the building he asked what needed to be done and with that he began to work. As always, his manner was cheerful. He neither complained about being called in on his day off, nor of the hard work and long hours that lay before us as we cleaned up this mess. Between the two of us, both working wet vacuums, we were able to get the situation under control. Thanks to Horace, what was a bad situation was quickly turned into an effort of teamwork that ended with a flooded building soon cleaned, sanitized and under dehumidifiers much more quickly than I could have ever done by myself. This is just one example of many that I could tell of Horace’s selfless actions in his service to WFU and his loyalty to his coworkers. Horace is truly deserving of being honored as “Employee of the Quarter”.

Kim Culberson

Many times she will take time out of her day to help anyone, always with a happy non-judgmental attitude.  She is eager to listen to new ideas.  She respects all people and is fair and honest. She is extremely easy to approach. Her personality is a great asset to this department.  Her work quality is superior.
