Exemption / Advanced Placement Information

Advanced Placement Information

Because clear expression in writing characterizes an educated adult, the college requires all first-year students
to take English 111: The Writing Seminar, unless they earn an exemption.

Exemption with Credit

Students may be exempted from the Writing Seminar with credit by one of three means:

  1. Achieving a 4 or 5 on the AP test in either Language or Literature.
  2. Achieving a score of 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate exam for English, Higher Level. No credit or
exemption will be awarded for the Subsidiary Level Test.
  3. Achieving a C+ or higher in an equivalent course at another accredited college or university, provided that the
course was taught by regular college faculty on the college campus to enrolled college students. We do not
accept college "dual-enrollment" or "concurrent" courses.

Exemption without Credit

Students who have achieved either a score of 35 or 36 on their combined English/Writing ACT examination or
a 750 in the SAT Writing Test are eligible to take an exemption exam given by the English Department
during orientation in August. Students who demonstrate the ability to write an outstanding college-level
essay may receive exemption from English 111 without credit. Check the orientation schedule for the time
and place. Students who matriculate in January may request to take an exemption examination during
their Orientation period.
