Please read this FAQ to more fully understand the new policy.
Why is the University asking for my mobile phone number?
The University needs mobile phone numbers of community members to better reach them in times of emergency. Many students, faculty and staff use mobile phones; some use them exclusively. Fewer and fewer students use the landline phones provided in the residence halls. Having access to mobile phone numbers increases the University's ability to reach students, faculty and staff in a timely manner. The University will continue using landlines to reach the University community, also.
Who determines what an emergency is?
University senior leadership, including the President, University Police, University Vice Presidents, the Provost and Deans will determine what constitutes an emergency situation. In some special situations, particularly those posing an imminent threat to the community, University Police has been authorized to alert the campus community without awaiting a decision by senior administration.
What does the University consider an emergency?
Generally, the University is requesting mobile phone numbers so that community members can be contacted in the event of two types of emergencies. One type involves current or approaching major events that threaten the safety of the University's students, faculty, staff and others on the Reynolda Campus. In addition, the University might need to contact an individual community member in regards to an emergency situation that affects that person specifically. For instance, the University might need to contact a student because of the sudden death, injury or serious illness of a family member or friend.
