Pioneer DVD Recorder Howto

This document will guide you through the process of recording to the Pioneer DVD Recorder owned by the Department of Education. For other information on using the DVD Recorder, including a picture showing how to connect a digital video camera, please consult the main DVD recorder page.

NOTE: Before beginning your DVD recording project, consult the following list of specifications for the type of DVD-R you will need to use with our DVD Recorder.

The DVD-R disc must be:

  • 2X speed
  • "For General" type (as opposed to "For Authoring type")
  • Single-sided and single-density (4.7GB capacity)

AND, from one of the following companies:

  • Hitachi Maxell, LTD
  • Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. (Verbatim)
  • Mitsui Chemicals, Inc.
  • Pioneer Video Corporation
  • TDK Corporation

Connecting the DVD Recorder

  • You'll Need:
  • Camcorder with power supply and video source material
  • TV monitor
  • DVD Recorder with s-video cable connected to the back of the monitor (in the port marked output-all the way to left when facing back of recorder).
  • Firewire cable from camcorder to DVD Recorder.

Connect all of the equipment before you turn on any of the equipment. Set your camera on VCR mode, and make sure your tape is rewound to the point at which you want to start recording your DVD.

Power up and press the STANDBY/ON button on the front of the DVD Recorder to begin.

Recording the DVD

  • Open the drawer on the front of the DVD Recorder and insert a blank DVD.
  • Close the drawer. "LOAD" should appear on the front of the DVD Recorder.
  • Press "TOP MENU" on the remote control.
  • Select "DV RECORD".
  • Press "REC START". You'll hear the camera start and see your video running behind the on-screen commands. You will not hear the audio with the video.
  • Press ENTER (center button on the remote) to finish recording. An on-screen message will let you know how many seconds it will take to finish recording.

Follow this process for every separate title you want on your DVD. (Titles will show up on a menu list on your final DVD.)

Add titles before you finalize your DVD (a process necessary to make your DVD readable in players other than the DVD Recorder).

Adding Titles

  • To create titles, press the "TOP MENU" button on the remote control.
  • Scroll to title (using the joystick marked 'Enter'), and click (press in on the 'Enter' button) on the unnamed title on the right side of the menu screen.
  • When you press Enter, you will see the "Input Title Name" screen.
  • Delete the default title by putting the cursor in teh title bar then scrolling down and pressing delete.
  • Select title names by using the remote to navigate the symbol palette. (Remember that the Enter key in the middle of the remote is also a joystick.)
  • Press "MENU" on the remote to exit.

Finalizing the DVD
Do NOT do this when practicing!

  • Press "SETUP" on the remote.
  • Press "DISC SETUP".
  • Press "FINALIZE" and "START".
