Two master's degree programs are offered for teacher education candidates with differing backgrounds. Both
lead to the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) degree and a North Carolina "M" Teaching License. English,
Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are grades 9-12, and Foreign Languages are grades K-12.
The Master Teacher Fellows (MTF) Program is a MAT-type program intended for students who have a Bachelor's
degree (or equivalent coursework) in one of our content areas and who seek Teacher Licensure and a Master's
degree. The following content areas are offered English, Foreign Languages (French or Spanish, K-12),
Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), and Social Studies. During an intense thirteen-month period
of study and field experience, Fellows engage in graduate course work in the discipline, rotate through four Master
Teachers' classrooms, take part in intensive pedagogical courses, and teach in a local school under the guidance of
one of the Master Teachers.
The Master Teacher Associates (MTA) Program is a program intended for licensed and experienced teachers who
seek additional study in professional education. The following content areas are offered English, Foreign Languages
(French or Spanish, K-12), Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), and Social Studies. This program
is also thirteen months and it includes coursework and other requirements to foster extension of the candidate's
development in content, pedagogy, and leadership.
All programs are fully accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and by the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
