Files to be gathered...

The procedure:

• Download all the essential files, and any of the optional ones you want, to a temporary directory on the disk drive where you want to install the emTeX system.
  
• Run emtex.bat, after reading install.txt.
  
• Finally, please check the emtexgi news page for any recent developments (e.g. the latest version of the emtexgi executable from this site.)

[Update Notice, March 10, 1997: Most of the emTeX files referenced below are dated 1995 or 1996, but the following were updated in early March 1997: first.zip, l2input.zip, l2tools.zip, mf4b.zip and tex4b.zip. The ``l2'' files contain the latest release of the LaTeX2e macros, while the mf and tex zipfiles contain new versions of mf386.exe and tex386.exe respectively, with improvements for use under Windows 95 and NT. For information on switching to these new versions see the emtexgi update page.]

Note: If you are sure that you do not want to make postscript files then dvips583.zip is not required.

The remaining essential files are install.txt, emtex.bat and unzip.exe. (But as mentioned above, please check the emtexgi news page too.)

[Please note: emtex.bat is stored on a unix server, and it may not be read properly by DOS after downloading. To check the file, run it without any parameters first. If the format is OK you'll get a message asking for a parameter, if it's not OK, "Bad command or filename". In the latter case try opening emtex.bat in your DOS editor, e.g. "edit emtex.bat"; save the file without making any changes; and it should be put into DOS format.]

You will also need an editor for TeX files: I recommend Programmer's File Editor (PFE): get pfe101i.zip (for Windows 95/98/NT) or pfe101.zip (for Windows 3.1). If you would prefer to use a Windows version of the emacs editor, please take a look at Martin Fuchs' Emtexgi and NTemacs page.
