Welcoming new staff members:

This Fall we are delighted to bring on board three new additions to our language teaching staff.  Ms. Jinglin Xiong an adjunct instructor of Chinese language, Ms. Olivia Wang our Fulbright Chinese Teaching Assistant, and Ms. Kanae Yokoyama, our Japanese Teaching Assistant.

Cultural club news:

The Japanese Studies Club is currently planning its Fall semester events.  For more information about the club and its activities, please contact this year’s president of the club, Yuan-Rui Xiang at xiany6@wfu.edu.

Scholarships and language study:

In East Asian news, for students interested in conducting a research project abroad under the supervision of a faculty member, there is the excellent Richter Scholarship. The scholarship provides up to $5000 in funding for research at a location away from campus, including international destinations! If you have a project that you are interested in pursuing, we encourage you to approach one of your faculty members to discuss it. http://www.wfu.edu/college/richter.html

In Chinese studies there is the following summer language study opportunity:

Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes - As part of the National Security Language Initiative, the U.S. government is providing funding so that students can study and master "critical need" foreign languages including Chinese. If you are an undergraduate, or graduate student, you are eligible to apply. Visit www.CLScholarship.org for information and an on-line application. I've also included information below under the Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarships listing.

Our affiliated program at Guanxi Normal University in Guilin, China, offers an excellent summer language study program. A number of our students have attended in the past.  Please contact Dr. Moran or Dr. Shi for more information.

In Japanese studies there are the following opportunities:

(1) The Japan-America Student Conference

In the summer of 2010 the conference will take place in the U. S. cities, and the 2011 conference will be in Japan. The conference website, with applications online is www.jasc.org. The conference provides an excellent opportunity not only to interface with other students in Japanese studies, but to create contacts with individuals who will surely become the leaders of the next generation in Japanese studies and in the Japanese professional world. The conference fee is $3,000, which covers all food, lodging, and group travel during the conference. If you are interested in taking part, we encourage you to contact your local Rotary or other service support organization to apply for funding. Perhaps even the Richter scholarship would be an option to fund your participation in this conference.

(2) The JET Program in Japan

For students who will be graduating next year and are starting to think about opportunities after graduation, the JET Program, with application deadlines in November, is an excellent opportunity to live and work in Japan, while assisting in English language education. Although the positions are highly competitive, salary is approximately 3.6 million yen (a little over $30,000 at current exchange rates) per year. Information is available online at www.jetprogramme.org. Kent Greer in International Studies (greerrk@wfu.edu) acts informally as a campus liaison and can meet with you and discuss the program.

Career counseling and graduate study advising:

If this is your last semester or year at Wake Forest and you are considering either graduate programs or career choices in Asian Studies, our faculty are happy to provide suggestions and answer any questions you have about possible opportunities and study programs. Please make an appointment with your area faculty to discuss either your general ideas about career and study choices, or for more directed assistance.
