The Vienna Theorists
Summer of 2001
Vienna through the Eyes of a Counseling Student
By Catherine Earnhardt, Class of 2002
Traveling to Vienna this summer with several classmates, professors,
and alumni of the WFU Counseling Program was an experience
that will be impossible for me to ever forget. As we boarded
the plane in Greensboro, I did not know what to expect from
the class on Vienna theorists or the alumni who had decided
to join us. However, once we arrived at the Flow Haus in the
19th district of Vienna, I realized it was definitely going
to be a fun, yet academically motivating trip.
After settling in to the beautiful house that we called home
for the next two weeks, we ventured out into the city and discovered
how hard it is to get around a city where German is the primary
language spoken. However, we became acclimated (well, OK, sort-of)
with how to get around and during our time in Austria, we had
ample opportunities to explore the city and surrounding areas.
Each participant was asked to prepare a presentation on different
topics assigned before the trip for class. Nicole, Kristin,
and Paige presented on the topic of psychodrama and Jacob Moreno
while Kirby, Vickie, and I presented on the life and works
of Alfred Adler.
The alumni masterfully handled several of Freud’s cases
as well as his interpretation of dreams. Travel That Can Change
Your Life, by Jeffrey Kottler was a must read for the class
that was covered during a class discussion. W e were also required
to read Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl, as
well as another book he authored of our choice, which I would
highly recommend anyone to do. One of the many highlights of
the trip was meeting Alex Vesely and Elly Frankl, Viktor Frankl’s
grandson and widow, respectively. They were both extremely
gracious, which allowed us to see Frankl in a more personal
and relevant light.
There are so many wonderful memories that I have taken from
my experiences in Vienna but I cannot even begin to cover that
list here. Meeting a spending time with several alumni from
the program allowed me to realize and learn about experiences
first-hand from the counseling field.
I learned so much during this trip, not just about the theorists
we studied, but also about me. The trip also allowed me to
see places that I had only previously imagined visiting. I
highly recommend to the first years (as well as the second
years who did not go this summer) to take advantage of this
wonderful opportunity in the upcoming summer.
