EXPERIENCE - In education

 

Associate Professor, Counselor Education Program, Department of Education, Wake Forest University, August 1996 - Present

·                     As a faculty member in the counselor education program, I participate in teaching, research and service.  I have been appointed to the graduate faculty.  I supervise students in practicum and internship and work closely with the school systems in multiple ways.  I also advise students and consult with education faculty on classroom management, interdisciplinary teaching, and innovative school practices.  My research interests include counseling in the schools, counselor effectiveness and counselor training emphasizing the role of creative arts in those areas.  I have taught the following courses at Wake Forest:

As a faculty member of the counseling program, my duties included instruction, supervision, research, and service. I have developed courses for undergraduate retention, student athletes, and cross-cultural issues.  I have supervised practicum and internship students as well as graduate teaching assistants.  I have served on university wide committees of curriculum and retention and several college committees.   I was the chair of a program committee that worked on CACREP accreditation.  I served as counseling program coordinator for a year.  My research is in the areas of counseling effectiveness, counselor training and supervision, and program development.  The following are courses I taught at East Tennessee State:

Duties were those necessary to the instruction of seventh and eighth grade language arts classes.  For two-thirds of the school day I worked with students who were in at-risk academically.  As a co-director for this project, I helped design and implement a curriculum for the needs of these students.  This was a holistic approach that included many lessons in guidance activities designed to improve self-esteem, to develop study and life skills, and to increase communication abilities.  These were designed as developmental guidance lessons and delivered by me in the role of counselor.

Teacher & Counselor - Page County Public Schools, October 1973 – June 1979

My teaching assignments were ninth, tenth, and twelfth grade English classes.  I worked half time in the guidance office and taught half time.  Also I was faculty advisor for the yearbook and the newspaper and worked on a curriculum development committee.  I also worked closely with the career development specialist during the school year and worked as a counselor in a summer program for disadvantaged youth.

Duties include all involved in owning and operating a small business, such as bookkeeping, planning, purchasing, marketing, and staffing.

 

 

EDUCATION

Specialty: counselor education.  Practicum and internship experiences include work at a community agency for convicted felons, an elementary school, and a college-counseling center.  Also I have led structured and unstructured small groups, worked with practicum classes, and was involved in several research projects.  I was directly involved in the writing and reply to the CACREP accreditation process which was successfully completed while I was at UTK.  The faculty and College of Education honored me by naming me Outstanding Graduate Student in Counselor Education.

I also began the certification process to become a school counselor.
