The Counseling Program at Wake Forest University is structured for full-time students only. An average of fifteen full-time students are accepted each year.
Classes are held during the day. Typically the first year students attend class on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8:30 and 4. Second year students have most of their classes on Tuesdays and spend another 20 hours per week on their internship sites.
No. Due to limitations imposed by teaching loads, size of facilities and the cohort nature of the program, enrollment in our courses is limited to full time students who have completed the regular admissions process.
Students can only begin the Program in the fall. Classes are arranged in a logical developmental order and offered certain semesters only. Please see the Sequence of Courses.
No. Counseling attracts a diverse group with backgrounds in different disciplines including but not limited to psychology. The prospective student is also encouraged to investigate the profession of counseling through research or by volunteering in human services organizations or schools.
Yes. The Graduate School of Wake Forest University requires the GRE for consideration for admittance for all graduate programs.
We have no rigid cut off scores. The average GRE score for students admitted this fall was 1200+ on verbal and quantitative combined. The average GPA was 3.3+. Note the word "average". Acceptance is based on a combination of criteria including grade point average, GRE scores, recommendations, work experience, professional commitment, suitability for the profession, and the personal interview. GPA and GRE scores are used primarily to decide which candidates to bring in for a personal interview.
The program sequence is two years beginning in the fall semester and ending after the spring semester of the second year.
Yes. Students must attend the first session of summer school between the two years. Most students elect to take the Vienna Theorists course when it is offered and travel to Vienna to study for two weeks in late June/early July during the second session of summer school.
Students who are accepted into the program are offered full or partial tuition scholarships, which cover both academic years and summer school courses.
No, we have no provision in this small program for transfer students.
The only option would be to apply to the program for entry the following fall (remember the January 15th deadline). If you were to be accepted, you could petition the faculty to transfer up to six credits. It is unlikely that you could complete the rest of the program in less than two years due to the fixed order of course offerings.
Yes and no. We encourage those interested in our program to obtain additional information about and impressions of our program by speaking with current students. If you are in the area or planning to visit, we can arrange an informational interview for you on campus. If distance makes travel difficult, we can arrange to have a student contact you by phone.
The admissions team will invite top candidates to campus for a personal interview during the admissions process.
We will call you to schedule an interview if a review of your application indicates you are one of the top candidates. You must come to campus for a personal interview if invited in order to be considered for admission.
It is our policy not to allow applicants to sit in on classes. You may, however, talk to current and former students about their experiences in class.
