Dr. Helme is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Wake Forest University. Dr. Helme also holds a cross appointment with the the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy, within the Division of Public Health Sciences of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Helme recently completed a project where he served as Principal Investigator of a 4 year study funded by The Colorado Tobacco Research Program testing the efficacy of a media-based intervention targeted at reducing high sensation-seeking adolescents' attitudes and intentions towards using tobacco and marijuana. Dr. Helme has also served as co-investigator on an NCI funded project that sought to test the effectiveness of a web-based support system for community tobacco control coalitions in the state of Colorado. Currently Dr. Helme is working on a project with colleagues at WFUBMC that seeks to test the feasibility of forming and supporting anti-tobacco coalitions within the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe of North Carolina. Dr. Helme's other research interests involve: curriculum (classroom) and community-based interventions targeted at reducing risky sexual behavior among at-risk adolescents; and physician-patient communication as it relates to patient satisfaction among individuals suffering from chronic diseases, especially diabetes.
