Navigating Study Abroad: Preparing Students
Beyond the Classroom

Culture shock. Diversity attitudes. Unusual cultural expectations. If you are like most international educators, you have discovered how ill-prepared most students are to successfully handle cross-cultural issues like these. Students who study abroad tend to do well with basic logistical and academic aspects while overseas, but they lack fundamental skills in recognizing cultural patterns and values, understanding cultural nuances and, simply, appreciating the culture they are visiting.

On February 26-27, 2010, Wake Forest University will host the second annual Workshop on Intercultural Skills Enhancement (WISE) to provide faculty and staff who teach students abroad an opportunity to learn ways to integrate intercultural competence more seamlessly into their programs and help students successfully navigate their study abroad experiences.

International education experts will share their insight, strategies and personal experiences in practical, hands-on sessions on topics such as:

All workshop sessions will include small group interaction so participants can discuss principles learned and even create sample assignments.

The workshop will be held at Graylyn International Conference Center, just minutes from the campus of Wake Forest University.

The cost of the workshop is $295, which includes dinner Friday evening, February 26, lunch Saturday, February 27, snacks and coffee. For out-of-town guests, the Workshop Plus option, which cost $305, includes all of the above plus accommodations for one night at Graylyn and breakfast Saturday morning. Cost is $395.

Deadline for registration is December 1, 2009
