Intercultural Competency Program

Wake Forest has designed three courses to help you prepare for the cultural aspects of studying abroad, participating in a Richter Scholarship-funded research trip, or taking a service trip organized by the Volunteer Service Corps (VSC). These three cross-cultural courses are taken in succession and will help you develop skills necessary to study, live and work effectively in cultures other than your own. Learn how changing technologies and global initiatives in business, politics, economics, arts and sciences reduce the impact of geographic boundaries.

INS 150 (Intercultural Competency Before International Study): Introduces students to theoretically-based issues and skills needed for understanding and interacting with people in other cultures. Taken in the semester before the student studies abroad. 1.0 credits, pass/fail only. P-POI.

INS 151 (Intercultural Competency During International Study): Gives students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained in INS 150 to develop a better understanding of cultural variables such as value orientations, communication styles, and nonverbal communication. Taken while the student is abroad. 1.0 credits, pass/fail only. P-INS 150.

INS 152 (Intercultural Competency After International Study): Students reflect on their experience abroad and the cultural learning that occurred there. They also develop strategies for dealing with re-entry and applying the lessons learned now and in the future. Taken in the semester after the student has studied abroad. 1.0 credits, pass/fail only. P-INS 150
