Intercultural Competency Program - About the Instructor
Helen W. Akinc, ICP course instructor
Helen W. Akinc has many years of experience in both intercultural and university life. In December 2007, after twenty years of service at Wake Forest University, she left her fulltime position to pursue other creative lifelong interests. At that time she had served as Assistant Dean for Student Professional Services at the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy for a number of years. Through this role, she worked closely with students, recruiters, alumni, the Office of Career Services, the Division of Student Life, and various other university offices. She was also the long-time director of the Summer Management Program, an award-winning crash course in business basics for non-business majors. In 2001, she won the university-wide advising award for excellence in advising, chaired the Student Life Committee for one academic year and coordinated the Kemper Scholarship Program at Wake Forest University for many years.
She lived in Ankara, Turkey for almost five years, speaks Turkish, edits parts of a Turkish tourism website, and is writing a Turkish cookbook. Her family is intercultural as well, with a Turkish husband, and family members with roots in Mexico, Latvia, England, etc.
In addition to teaching the Intercultural Competency classes, she also assists an international organization called Kybele (kybeleworldwide.com) and pursues a variety of interests. She recently authored a book entitled The Praeger Handbook for College Parents (December 2009).
