New permanent exhibit, open September 1, 2009

Curated by Director Stephen Whittington, MOA’s new permanent exhibit focuses on St. Bonaventure University’s collection of ancient Maya pottery. A wide array of Maya images, symbols, and hieroglyphs that represent different aspects of beliefs about the universe are on display. The imagery serves as a point of departure to discuss ancient and contemporary Maya culture. This exhibit features bilingual text.

Lecture: The City on the Edge of Forever: Palenque and the Classic Maya World

Maya archaeologist Dr. George Stuart will discuss the discovery and exploration of the Maya capital of Palenque from the 1700s to its use by the present-day Maya. The lecture will cover a number of great archaeological discoveries and the latest decipherments of the city’s lengthy hieroglyphic texts.
Días de los Muertos (Days of the Dead)

MOA’s annual exhibit features a traditional Mexican ofrenda; a home altar with sugar skulls, colorful tissue paper cutouts, food and beverage offerings, marigolds, and photos of deceased relatives to honor the dead. The exhibit will also include traditional Mexican crafts, children’s toys, and a photo essay illustrating different aspects of the celebration. This exhibit features bilingual text.
Latin American Family Day
1-4pm, Saturday, October 10
Museum of Anthropology
This family-friendly celebration of Latin American culture will feature craft projects, music, storytelling, and food relating to current MOA exhibits and other Latin American cultures. Admission is free!
