McLaren is a pastor, author, preacher, and leader in what is known as the Emerging Church movement in America. He holds the BA and MA in English from the University of Maryland with a specialization in the Romantic poets and the novels of Walker Percy. From 1986 to 2006 he served as pastor of the Cedar Ridge Community Church: an innovative, nondenominational congregation in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the author of numerous books including The Church on the Other Side: Doing Ministry in the Postmodern Matrix, Finding Faith, and A Generous Orthodoxy.
