Worship/Meditation Opportunities: Wake Forest University Meditation Group

The WFU Meditation Group

The Wake Forest University Meditation Group, started informally in the spring of 2011, is made up of university students, faculty, and staff as well as local residents of Winston-Salem and surrounding areas. Our group shares interest in various Buddhist meditative traditions, and comes together to practice meditation in a predominantly, though not exclusively, Zen style. Participants, who come from different religious traditions, meet to learn and support one another in our individual meditation and mindfulness practice. Sessions generally last 30 minutes and involve seated meditation (zazen) for 25 minutes and walking meditation (kinhin) for 5 minutes.

Whether you’ve never meditated or have been practicing for years, the meditation group can offer support for a new practice or an ongoing one. Chairs, cushions, and benches are all available to support you in sitting whichever way is most comfortable to you. This drop-in group requires no registration and is open to all.  Our weekly schedule for the spring semester (2012), beginning Weds, Jan. 18 and continuing while classes are in session, is as follows:

  • Monday, 12:15 PM
  • Wednesday, 6:30 PM-Brief introduction to mediation (1st Weds. of each month only)
  • Wednesday, 7:00 PM
  • Friday, 8:00 AM

If you have never meditated, we suggest that you attend one of the monthly intro sessions first.

Periodically, we will invite teachers from different Buddhist traditions to give a dharma talk or provide meditation instruction. We’ll post this schedule as it develops.

The Interfaith Meditation Room, 23 Reynolda Hall, is adjacent to the Chaplain’s office (Suite 22). It’s best to enter from the East side of Reynolda Hall. Click here for directions.
