Self-Assessment
Career development is a continuous process. If the career development process hasn't begun for you yet, it should! Self-Assessment is a great place to start. How do I assess myself? Try using the some of the techniques listed below:
- Look at your past experiences, skills, and potential.
- Assess your values, priorities, interests, skill level, needs, goals, and dreams.
- Identify your definition of success.
- Consider other factors affecting your career decisions such as lifestyle, personal relationships, finances, and geographical preferences.
Below are some tools that may assist you in this process:
- Life Career Planning Groups - offered by the University Counseling Center. Click here for more information. Both the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator are given as part of the Life Career Planning Groups.
- The Strong Interest Inventory and Skills Confidence Inventory - administered by the University Counseling Center at no charge. The Strong Inventory measures your level of interest in occupational areas, activities, school subjects, and work environments, and then compares your interests with people who are happily employed in a variety of occupations. Please click here for more information.
- Myers-Briggs Type Indicator - gives you an insight into your preferred ways of working, with possible implications for career choice. Please click here for more information.
