The Job Offer and How to Cope

  • When you are offered a job, you have an important decision to make. Do you accept the offer or reject it? If you are having difficulty making a decision, please make an appointment with our office.
  • Sometimes an extension of time is needed to consider more than one offer. When this happens, don’t be afraid to ask for an extension. Many employers will give you a few more days if you really need it.
  • If you elect to accept the offer of employment, make sure you understand all the details of the offer, including position, salary, location, and start date. It is advisable to get the offer in writing.
  • If the job offer meets your criteria, write a letter accepting the offer. Guidelines for writing this letter are available here.
  • After you have accepted an offer of employment, write a letter rejecting the other offers you may have. Do this with great care. You may wish to consider employment with these employers in the future. Be tactful.
  • When you have accepted an offer, stop interviewing! It is unprofessional and unethical to keep interviewing with other employers to see if something better comes along.
  • Please inform the Office of Career Services when you accept a position. This information is used for statistical purposes only.
