Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do to assist my child?

We encourage you to read “A Parent’s Guide to Career Development” and "A Career Planning Course for Parents" published by Jobweb.

What does my son/daughter need to be doing to explore careers or conduct a job/internship search?

This article from Jobweb offers great insight into the process and how you can help you student begin their search.

Do you have a checklist for them to follow? What should they be doing now?

Students have a wide variety of interests, skills, and goals. While there is not one RIGHT path for students to follow, we encourage you and your student to review the 4-year plan found here:

What types of opportunities are there for my student to explore different careers?

More information coming soon.

What programs/resources do you offer?

The Career Services office offers a range of services to meet the needs of our students. You can see a listing of many of our services here.

Encourage your student to take advantage of the resources that are appropriate for their needs. Your student can schedule an appointment by visiting the Career Services office in Room 8, Reynolda Hall or by calling 758-5902.

Who should they meet with in the office?

Each member of our staff is available to work with your student. Encourage your student to schedule an appointment and our staff will work to ensure they find the resources and people that best meet their needs.

What kinds of jobs do ___________________ majors get?

Most employers are seeking a set of skills rather than a specific major. In particular, employers look for students who can demonstrate skills in leadership and teamwork and who are strong communicators. Employers in different fields will, of course, value different sets of skills. Other skills that are frequently high on employer’s lists include: strong work ethic, initiative, problem-solving skills, analytical skills, flexibility/adaptability, and technical skills.

What is the average starting salary of a WFU grad?

Salaries can vary widely by industry, location, and market demands. As a reference point, we have included a link to research done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

How can I help in referring job/internship leads to Career Services?

Jobs – If you are in a position to hire a Wake Forest student, either for an internship or job, we invite you to share this information with us. In fact, opportunities that parents and alumni share with us are critical to our success. The liberal arts education at Wake Forest provides Wake Forest students with a broad range of skills and Wake Forest students are interested in working in a wide variety of locations. If you would like to share an internship or job lead with the Career Services office, please contact Dana Hutchens at hutchens@wfu.edu or 336-758-5902.
