In the Fall of 2005, Campus Recreation and Outdoor Pursuits acquired a racquetball court for the creation of a bouldering room. Limited by the size of one court, it was a challenge to develop a complex, yet creative way to push the limits of climbing, and at the same time, maximize the existing space. With the help of the student staff of Outdoor Pursuits and Campus Recreation, the dream of climbing at Wake was a reality in March 20, 2006. The Crux opened to the delight of students, faculty, and staff, which can now climb for free in Reynolds Gym.
The Crux Bouldering wall gives climbers the freedom to explore difficult problems and routes minus a climbing rope. It eliminates the fear of heights, challenges ones strength and balance and united common interests. Dreamed up from balsa wood, the design of the Crux was based solely on the idea of anti-gravity. With three sections that span the ceiling and 1888 square feet of climbing surface, the possibilities for routes are unlimited. The climbing surface is made up of ply wood coated with special texture paint to provide a rough traction for those straining problems. |
