Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Room 208, Carswell Hall
Description: Dr. Vincent Roscigno, Distinguished Professor of Sociology at The Ohio State University will speak on Bureaucratic Legitimation and Race-, Sex- and Age-Discrimination at Work. Data for the talk are drawn from a large sample of verified race
(n=9,013), sex (n=6,162), and age (n=2,181) discrimination cases. Roscigno qualitatively examined and content coded specifically on employer explanations for conduct that civil rights investigators deemed discriminatory and, thus, illegal. He finds that race, sex and age discrimination are all often portrayed as legitimate relative to formal meritocratic policies and criteria. Interesting variations also emerge: business logics surrounding "organizational restructuring" and "business efficiency" are commonly invoked by employers in cases of age discrimination; racial discrimination is often argued to be justifiable given formal policies and penalties surrounding worker misconduct; and, for sex discrimination, particularly that surrounding pregnancy and maternity, employers rely on bureaucratically-based narratives centering on worker dependability. The activation of such discourses is key for understanding cultural elements of inequality production within organizations.
