Winding Down, Gearing Up!: Designing Effective Writing Assignments

Event details

Date: Friday, December 14, 2012
Time: 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Location: Room 301, Reynolda Hall
Description: As the semester winds down it is a great time to reflect on the successes and challenges of our teaching. We know that spring semester will be upon us before it seems really possible, so it is helpful to use our end-of-semester reflections to inform our course preparations for spring. In these Winding Down, Gearing Up! workshops we offer the opportunity to take the time to capture your thoughts on changes needed in future courses, to think about that new course you will be teaching or to re-think the one you'll be re-teaching!

Portion 1 of this two-segment session will present ways to design effective writing assignments. Topics covered will include how to create effective writing prompts/assignments that are consistent with course goals; how to scaffold writing assignments in order to promote effective, process-based writing; and how to design alternative writing projects that give students experience writing in different genres and for different purposes and audiences. (This segment will include discussion of designing and scaffolding specific example assignments.) Portion 2 of this two-segment session will enable participants to workshop their own writing assignments and develop new ones, while receiving feedback from group members and session facilitators. Attendees should bring with them to the session a current assignment they wish to refine and/or a general outline of a new assignment they wish to implement.
